Detecting Fake Followers & Bot Farms
Paying a creator based on follower count when 40% of their audience consists of bots is the fastest way to burn your marketing budget. Here is how to audit an account manually.
The Mathematics of a Bot Audience
You don't need expensive software to spot a fake audience. You just need to look at ratios.
- The Like-to-Comment Ratio: Real viral videos have a roughly 100:1 to 50:1 like-to-comment ratio. If a video has 50,000 likes but only 12 comments, the likes are bought.
- The View-to-Like Ratio: On TikTok, a standard view-to-like ratio is around 10%. If a video has 1M views but only 2,000 likes, it was likely botted (or pushed via low-quality ads).
- Sudden Spikes: If they gain exactly 10,000 followers in a single day, then zero for a month, they are buying followers.

Action Steps
If you suspect an account has fake followers but you still want to work with them (e.g., for content creation purposes), never pay a flat rate based on their following. Instead, negotiate a low base fee + performance bonus, or just buy the content usage rights.
